As the primary graphic design, the major responsibility I had, were to complete edits for product labels as well as to create any on/offline marketing materials for their aromatherapy company. Besides the occasional revision of old product labels, my other label design work was for their trio face masks set. This set of face masks included the scents - charcoal, honey turmeric and cucumber chamomile and took 1-2 months to prefect.
INSIGHTS
In creating new labels, I needed to see what our competitors were doing. To find out which companies are doing successful in selling their products, I looked into companies like Lush, L’Occitane en Provence and Escents Aromatherapy, who were already well established face/ body care brands. I looked specifically at their product labels and asked myself “how did their labels effectively communicate to their consumers about what the product was?” Later into the project, some other questions that surfaced were “How can I communicate the steps to use the product as well as what are the benefits that the product can offer to potential clients who may have different skin types?”
In keeping to the radiant and clean branding standards, I came up with three drafts - two which aimed for a simple blocked design and the other with an image to indicate the ingredients in the product.
SOLUTION
Some conclusions I came to, were:
The label needed to look clean so to give off a cleansing connotation to the product
The content of the label needed to be legible for our targeted audience (females in their early to mid 20s)
The label design needed to be consistent with the jar it was going to be placed on
Despite some challenges our team faced in expenses and the ordering of the jars + lid, we managed to complete a big transaction with the American department store – TJX. We also faced some legibility challenges regarding the barcode, which needed many reiterations and lots of paper.
