Fit in 30 Academy

Client: Jeese Benson, Fit in 30 CEO

Project: Responsive website for the Fit in 30 Academy & Promotional Materials

Role: Graphic Designer & UX Designer

Partner: Job Lee

This project started with our client, Jesse reaching out to Job and I, requesting for a fluid and fully responsive website for Fit In 30’s new academy which opened at the start of 2019. The academy, named “Fit In 30 Academy”, is to be an extended educational component to their parent gym, Fit In 30.

We met with the client on several occasions to thoroughly understand their needs and offerings. Due to the complex nature of the business, which is a school that
1) trains gym enthusiasts to become workout coaches, and
2) recruits those seeking personal trainers to train under these new workout coaches,
Job and I agreed that the #1 priority of this new site is to effectively communicate the company’s services to its target demographic.

INSIGHTS
Upon conducting market research on facilities with similar business models such as the Vancouver College Massage Therapy and Steve Nash Fitness, we found that all successful academy programs differentiated themselves with their own “boutique” offerings. This effectively made what was previously a commodity-type service something unique to their respective brands. As a result, we realized our solution must highlight the academy’s two core unique selling propositions - the one-of-a-kind “NASM” certification they offer and the benefits of their certification and apprenticeship programs.

OUR PROPOSAL
With the help from the academy’s team, we set out to create a home page where both programs are clearly shown, and each section directs the user to their respective pages. Content was organized in simple and stacked manner, similar to how other gym’s website stack their content. Additional pages they requested were a FAQ and a contact page for clients to easily access information on their own and reduce the workload from the academy’s admins. My team and I also added a link for if users want to be redirected back to the original Fitin30.ca.

After a 2-week collaboration effort, the academy’s site, powered by SquareSpace, was complete and sent to the client for review. Some notable details of the site include:

  1. A home page highlighting both the certification and apprenticeship programs, breaking the two into distinct sections with each section directing the user to a dedicated landing page when clicked on. This allows users understand and differentiate these two separate unique programs the academy offers..

  2. All content was organized in a simple and stacked manner, inspired by the websites of popular local gyms/ physiotherapy clinics such as Anytime Fitness and VCMT.

  3. A menu item titled “Visit Fit In 30” was created, sending visitors to the FI30 website when clicked on.

  4. A “Contact Us” page was added to the menu, including simple fields such as Name, Phone, and a space to leave a message. Since the brand was new and its services being somewhat complex, we wanted to give visitors the ability to ask questions while collecting their information for future promotional efforts, such as email marketing campaigns or Facebook custom audiences.

  5. A “Frequently Asked Questions” page was created for clients to easily access information on their own. While conducting market research, we found the staff of many academies to be overloaded by client inquiries. Most of them were minor details such as opening hours and when the certification is given out. With this in mind, we reached out to the FI30 team with a list of questions scoured from the FAQ sections of other websites and built the FAQ page as a preventative measure for the volume of questions expected.

Sample graphic design work

In addition to their website, I was also tasked for individual graphic design projects from Fit in 30. The graphic work ranged from informative hand-outs to social media posts for their digital platforms (e.g. Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn). I would work alongside Jesse, the owner, and Natasha, our marketing lead. They are responsible for planning and executing marketing strategies while my role would be to create a consistent design across all the promotional materials as well as proof reading and quality control.

Below are a few examples.

Short Documentary Project

At the start of 2020, my team of 3 (collaboration with Anne Duong, Jimmie Sim) worked alongside the team at Fit in 30 Academy to create a short documentary highlighting their story and what is unique about their programs.

As the person who reached out to the team at Fit in 30 from our media team, I became the project lead for this short documentary. My role would be to act as the spokesperson for our team as well as to coordinate with the academy’s team to schedule interview and filming sessions. Anne was the driver behind the art direction and storyboard, while Jimmy was the main technician for our shoots.

Below is the academy’s short documentary that was uploaded on YouTube.
